The local 783 ABC radio’s garden competition has joined forces with the DesertSMART challenge, giving us 4 categories. Garden for Wildlife has also offered lots of support for the Wildlife Garden category. The ABC category is “Alice’s most needy garden”.
By being part of the Gardens Challenge, you'll have the opportunity to access $1000 to make your garden an example of best practice, DesertSmart irrigation. Native Plants for Central Australian Gardens
Greening Australia's fabulous new book "Native Plants for Central Australian Gardens" co-authored by Andy Vinter (of the Threatened Species Network) and Felicity Forth is now available.
Beautifully and simply presented, over 100 spectacular arid region plantsand helpful gardening tips and advice, this book will help gardeners and landscapers establish their own Central Australian native gardens. The local plants featured will survive with little water or fertiliser, they are attractive and will bring wildlife into your garden.
You can pick up a copy from the Greening Australia Nursery, open 9-4 on Thursdays, located at Charles Darwin University, off Grevillea Dv (0427775027).

Re-Thinking Waste in Schools
This project, which includes support from Keep Australia Beautiful, Alice Springs Desert Park, Arid Lands Environment Centre, Gardens for Wildlife, DKACoolMOB and WaterWise Schools will be launched early next term. Look out for an information pack arriving in your school in week 1.
What is the Re-thinking Waste-in Schools Challenge?
The Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB)NT Rethinking Waste – in Schools Challenge invites all NT schools to encompass a broad range of long term sustainableinitiatives for reducing all types of waste. The challenge is based on actions your school takes in the areas of litter reduction, recycling, energy and waste reduction. A list of sustainability action projects and resources that participating schools can select from will be made available on the Keep Australia BeautifulNT website www.kab.org.au/nt
